Tenth Anniversary Gifts in the Busiest Decade

A tenth anniversary usually arrives in the middle of the hardest decade. Plan accordingly.

Ten years is the anniversary that most often arrives at the worst possible moment.

For a large proportion of couples, year ten sits inside the decade with young children in it: the one where both people are tired, money is tight, careers are demanding, and the two of them have not had a conversation lasting more than nine minutes since 2019.

That is not a complaint. It is the design brief.

Tin is a better metaphor than it sounds

The traditional gift is tin or aluminium, which sounds like a joke after paper, wood and iron.

The stated meaning is durability combined with flexibility: a metal that does not break but does bend. Ten years into a marriage that is a more accurate description than anything on the rest of the list, and considerably more useful than the modern alternative, which is diamond and appears to have been chosen by somebody selling diamonds.

Nobody is obliged to follow either. But if you want a theme, bending without breaking is a decent one to work with.

What is actually scarce at ten years

Not money, usually, though it is often tight. Not objects, certainly.

Time alone together. That is the shortage, and it is acute.

Which means the highest-value anniversary gift at this point is frequently logistical rather than material: the childcare arranged, the table booked, the night away organised, with none of it requiring either of them to plan anything.

If you are a friend or family member wondering what to give a couple at ten years, offering to have the children for a weekend is worth more than anything you could buy. It is also the offer nobody makes, because it does not feel like a present.

If it is your own tenth

The advice from couples who mark this one well is consistent and slightly boring: do something, and do not make it a project.

Go back somewhere. The place you honeymooned, the pub you met in, the street you first lived on. Cheap, specific, and it produces a real conversation.

Write to each other. Ten years is far enough that both of you have forgotten a great deal, and a letter about the decade is a thing you will both keep.

Look at the photographs properly. Not scrolling. Sitting down with them, on a screen big enough, with a drink. Most couples have thousands of pictures and have looked at almost none of them since taking them.

Do not attempt a second wedding. The couples who do frequently report it being stressful in exactly the way the first one was.

A commission can be built around a specific place, which is usually the strongest brief.

The family has changed shape

The thing that most distinguishes a tenth from a first is that the unit is often no longer two people.

That changes what a good gift is. A romantic gesture aimed purely at the couple can feel slightly beside the point when the actual achievement of the last decade is the household they have built. Plenty of couples at ten years would rather be given something that includes the children than something that pointedly excludes them.

It also opens up a category that does not exist at a first anniversary: something that records the family as it is now. Ten years produces a great deal of change and almost nobody documents the middle of it. The house, the children at these ages, the dog, the car that keeps breaking.

A commissioned game is one way of doing that, and at ten years it works better as a family piece than as a couple piece. Both parents and the children painted in, the house as a level, the holiday everybody refers to, the running joke. Something the whole household plays rather than something the two of them look at.

The tiers are £99 for a single level and £349 for a multi-level build with a cast, and a family of four with a couple of locations sits comfortably in the second. What matters more than the tier is that the recognisable people appear immediately, for the reasons in how long a custom game should take to finish.

What to avoid

Anything that requires them to organise it. The gift is the organising.

A big party, unless they have asked for one.

Anything aimed only at one of them. A joint anniversary gift that is really a present for the wife, or the husband, is a common and noticeable miss.

Renewing the vows, unless they have specifically raised it. It is a lovely thing when wanted and awkward when arranged for somebody.

What this means

Give time and remove admin. That is the whole answer at this particular anniversary.

Include the children if there are children. The decade is about them too.

And write something down. Ten years is exactly far enough to have forgotten the beginning.

The first anniversary has a very different shape, covered in first wedding anniversary gift ideas, and the emphasis shifts again by 25 years.

◆ Questions

Common questions

What is the traditional 10th anniversary gift?+

Tin or aluminium, traditionally, and diamond in the more commonly used modern list. Tin is meant to represent durability and flexibility, which is a better metaphor at ten years than it sounds.

What do you give for a 10th wedding anniversary?+

Time, more often than an object. Ten years in, many couples have young children and very little of it, and a gift that creates an evening or a weekend together is worth more than anything purchasable.

Should you have a party for a tenth anniversary?+

Some do, and the ones that work tend to gather the people who were at the wedding rather than being a second wedding. Many couples prefer to go away instead.

What if you cannot afford a big gesture?+

Ten years is not the anniversary that calls for scale. Arranging childcare and an evening out reliably outperforms an expensive object at this particular point.

Can a commissioned game work as an anniversary gift?+

Yes, and at ten years it usually works best as a family thing rather than a couple thing, with the children in it as well. Commissions start at £99 for a single level.
